Esther Cummins attends the National Schools Constitutional Convention

Esther_Cummins_National_Schools_Constitutional_Convention_2_.jpgCongratulations to our College Vice Captain, Esther Cummins, who represented New South Wales at the National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra. Esther was one of just 30 delegates selected from NSW, joining 120 Year 12 Legal Studies students from across the country. Her selection followed her participation in the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention, where she was chosen from a pool of 94 delegates.

I invite you to read Esther's report below...

In March, I had the privilege of attending the National Schools Constitutional Convention as one of 30 NSW delegates in Canberra. The convention explored fiscal federalism and whether the Constitution supports and allows Australians to maintain national priorities while embracing regional economic growth.

On the first day of the convention, we were based in Parliament House. We toured Parliament and watched the House of Representatives Question Time live. Following this, we attended a Prime Minister’s Welcome Reception, whereby the Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP officially opened the Convention with a keynote address. We then had the opportunity to meet with federal members of parliament and senators. It was great to catch up with Pat Conaghan in Canberra and to meet Senator Dave Sharma. I thank him for reading my speech in the Senate last year as part of the Raise Our Voices in Parliament campaign. The day concluded by watching the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers, Treasurer of Australia, hand down the 47th Parliament’s final budget. It was such a privilege watching this historic speech take place, and it was particularly fitting, given the Convention’s topic.

During the second day, we heard from several keynote speakers before our working group sessions commenced, including Professor Kim Rubenstein, who spoke on the constitution’s impacts on state revenue-raising powers, Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, who spoke on the impact on the states of the changing meaning of excise, and Dr Angela Jackson, Commonwealth Grants Commission who spoke on the role of the Commonwealth Grants Commission. In the evening, we had the honour of meeting with Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, the Governor General of Australia, at Government House. She spoke about the importance of civics education and her role in being a ‘modern, visible and optimistic’ leader. A key highlight was, having Her Excellency sign our copies of the constitution - a souvenir we’ll keep forever! We then travelled to the National Press Club of Australia where we attended an official dinner and heard from inspiring speakers, including two Convention Alumni.

The final day involved our participation in a mock referendum, held by representatives of the Australian Electoral Commission, dealing with the two proposed questions:

    • To alter s.51(ii) of the Constitution to omit the words, “but so as not to discriminate between States or parts of States”
    • To alter the Constitution to allow States to impose a tax on goods after their production and manufacture but only in a way that does not discriminate against goods from other states.

The results of the referendum were announced, with both questions failing to receive the double majority required for them to be successfully passed. However, the findings of our working groups were collated into a communiqué and were presented to Senator the Hon Sue Lines, President of the Senate. This will be presented to the Parliament during the next sitting and will be written into Senate Hansard, with the Senate to consider the consensus formed by the delegation.

As we come to the end of Term 1, I want to extend my sincere thanks to our wonderful students, staff, and families. This term has been full of learning, growth, and connection, and we are truly blessed by the strong sense of community that brings us together.

Easter is a special time that reminds us of new beginnings, hope, and the joy of renewal. We give thanks to God for the many blessings we’ve shared—friendship, learning, faith, and the opportunity to journey together.

May the joy of Easter fill your hearts and homes with peace, love, and happiness.

Wishing you a blessed and happy Easter, and a joyful, restful break.

Holy Week and Easter Blessings

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Holy_Week.png

As this term draws to a close and we prepare for the holiday break, we also look ahead to the deeply significant period of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum, which will occur during our time away from school. For those less familiar with these central pillars of our Catholic faith, this time offers a powerful journey through the final days of Jesus’ earthly life, culminating in the glorious celebration of his resurrection.
Holy Week commences with Palm Sunday (13th April 2025), where we remember Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The waving of palm branches symbolises the crowds’ joyful welcome, acknowledging him as the Messiah. This joyful beginning, however, foreshadows the suffering that is to come.

The week then leads us to the Easter Triduum, the three most sacred days in the Church’s liturgical year. It begins on the evening of Holy Thursday (17th April 2025), where we commemorate the Last Supper. This Mass recalls Jesus’ final meal with his disciples, the institution of the Eucharist (Holy Communion), and his humble act of washing their feet – a powerful symbol of service and love.

Good Friday (18th April 2025) is a day of solemn reflection on Jesus’ Passion and death on the cross. It is a day of fasting and penance, where we contemplate the immense sacrifice made for our salvation. The liturgy on this day is unique, focusing on the reading of the Passion narrative and veneration of the cross.

Finally, we arrive at the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday (19th April 2025). This powerful and beautiful liturgy is the culmination of Holy Week. Beginning in darkness, the lighting of the Paschal Candle symbolises Christ’s victory over darkness and death, bringing the light of hope to the world. During this vigil, we hear readings that recount salvation history, culminating in the joyous proclamation of Christ’s resurrection.

Easter Sunday (20th April 2025) is the glorious celebration of Jesus’ triumph over death. It is a day of immense joy and hope, marking the central belief of our Christian faith – that Christ has risen and offers us the promise of eternal life.
As you spend time with family and friends during the holidays, we can be reminded of the words of the powerful words from 1 Peter 1:3:
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."

We encourage you to consider participating in these important liturgies within our local parishes. They offer a profound opportunity for reflection and spiritual growth.
Wishing you all a restful and blessed holiday break, filled with the hope and joy of the approaching Easter season. We look forward to welcoming you back next term.

Easter Mass Times

Inaugural Mass

On Wednesday morning, the St Joseph’s Regional College community gathered for its first College Mass of 2025. The occasion marked a significant start to the academic year, with a particularly warm welcome extended to new students and their families, as well as new staff members and their families.

The College's theme for the year is ‘Compassionate Respect,’ building upon the existing foundation of ‘Respect’ supported by the belief that true respect is rooted in compassion, referencing Romans 12:10, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.” The focus for the year will be on embodying this principle.

The year will involve exploring how to translate these values into tangible acts of compassionate respect, learning from exemplary figures. The aim is to extend this compassionate respect both within the College and to the wider community.
The Mass reinforces the commitment to follow the example of Jesus Christ, who embodies both respect and compassion. His presence and guidance are acknowledged as the community walks this path together.

During the entrance procession, College leaders carried the College candle and House candles, symbols of unity and shared aspirations, representing the light of compassionate respect to be cultivated throughout the College. The hope is that the year will be marked by a deep understanding and practice of compassionate respect, enriching every aspect of the community.

The Inaugural Mass was celebrated by Fr Paul Gooley, who centred his Homily on the theme of Respect.

Building on the idea of ‘Compassionate Respect,’ Fr Paul invited the community to reflect more deeply on what respect truly means in today’s world. He began by asking students, “What is something that is harder and harder to find in the world?” His answer was respect — a value that can seem to be in short supply in our world.

Fr Paul reminded us that, as Christians, we are called to a higher standard — to recognise the dignity of every person, each made in the image and likeness of God. Every person deserves to be treated with respect, which is fundamental to living out our faith in a divided world.

He then posed a second question: “How can we show respect to others, especially when it’s difficult?” He offered practical, everyday examples of how to live this out:

  • Listening to understand rather than judge
  • Speaking with kindness
  • Standing up for those being mistreated
  • Respecting differences
  • Showing courtesy in everyday actions

Fr Paul encouraged all present to ask God for the grace to see others through His eyes and to choose respect—even when it’s not easy. Respect is not just a feeling—it’s a conscious decision to treat others with dignity and love, reflecting the heart of Christ.

Level-Up Leadership Day: A Resounding Success

This Tuesday saw the successful execution of the Level-Up Leadership Day, a valuable initiative aimed at fostering leadership skills and collaboration amongst 30 selected students. The day proved to be an engaging and inspiring experience, providing a platform for growth and connection.

A highlight of the day was the insightful Question and Answer sessions held with special guests. Mrs Tanya Daley shared her leadership journey and offered valuable advice to the aspiring student leaders. Following this, students had the unique opportunity to engage with two imported players from the Port Macquarie Dolphin basketball team, Jaylen and Sean. Their experiences and perspectives on teamwork and leadership within a sporting context were particularly well-received. As Christians, they also shared how faith and prayer plays a role in their leadership and lives.

Beyond these enriching Q&A sessions, a significant portion of the day was dedicated to practical application. Students actively collaborated in planning events to be implemented over the next two school terms. This hands-on experience allowed them to exercise initiative, problem-solve, and work collectively towards shared goals.

Throughout the day, the participating students demonstrated impressive leadership qualities and a commendable willingness to step outside their comfort zones. The positive interactions and collaborative spirit fostered a strong sense of camaraderie within the group. These students have shown themselves to be a wonderful voice for their peers and will undoubtedly serve as terrific role models within the school community.

The success of the Level-Up Leadership Day was made possible by the dedicated efforts of the facilitating staff. A sincere thank you is extended to Mrs Kellie Croft, Mrs Fiona Jensen, and Mrs Mahni Philpott for their invaluable assistance in creating such a positive and impactful experience for our student leaders.

College ANZAC Day Commemoration Ceremony

This morning, the College held its ANZAC Day Commemoration, with a special focus on reflecting on the 75th anniversary of the Korean War.

Commemoration Address - Korean War

This year's commemorative poster acknowledges and remembers the 75th anniversary of Australian Service in the Korean War. Australian personnel served in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. The poster incorporates the numerous branches of the Defence force. The Australian Army is represented by 3 members of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is represented by a Gloster Meteor jet of No 77 Squadron. The 'Battle' Class Destroyer HMAS Tobruk represents the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) operations. The operating theatre annexe at the British Commonwealth General Military Hospital represents the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC).

Between 1945 and 1948, the Korean peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel into 2 occupation zones. The zone occupied by the United States became the Republic of Korea (South Korea). The Soviet-occupied zone became the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).

On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces invaded South Korea. They planned to capture Seoul and unite the peninsula under a communist regime. This act was the culmination of tensions that had been building since the end of World War II. The United Nations (UN) reacted quickly, asking its members to help repel the North Korean attack. Australia was one of 21 nations to offer military support.

In 1950, many Australians were serving in Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF). Some of these personnel were redeployed to South Korea. Over 3 years, more than 17,000 personnel from Australia’s 3 armed services (Navy, Army, Air Force) served in the Korean War.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was involved from the start. HMAS Shoalhaven and HMAS Bataan were committed just days after the war began. HMAS Sydney arrived in October. The ships' crews provided naval gunfire support, carrier screening and evacuation missions throughout the war. RAN ships were also involved in the landing and evacuation at Inchon and operations at Chinnampo and the Han River estuary.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was involved from the start, too. No 77 Squadron was deployed to South Korea within a week of the invasion. Flying Mustangs and, later, Meteor jets, the squadron provided close air support for UN ground forces. The RAAF also provided crews and aircraft for medical evacuation flights between Korea and Japan.

Three battalions of The Royal Australian Regiment served as part of Commonwealth formations in South Korea.

The 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), arrived in Pusan in September 1950. It included K-Force volunteers from Australia. 3RAR participated in the advance across the 38th parallel in October 1950 and the retreat in November, when China entered the war. The battalion was also involved in Australia’s best-known land actions, at Kapyong in April 1950 and Maryang San in October 1951.

The 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) arrived in South Korea in April 1952. The troops undertook patrols and operations against enemy positions.

In April 1953, the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) replaced 1RAR. The unit was also patrolling no-man’s-land, particularly north of UN lines.

The static nature of the war made life monotonous for troops. The climate compounded their frustrations. The soldiers experienced freezing winters, extreme heat, high humidity and heavy rainfall in summer.

During the Korean War, 153 Australian nurses served. They were members of the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service (RAAFNS) and the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service (RAANS).

Thank you to our musicians for contributing to the commemoration and Mrs Butler & Luke Davies for preparing them. A special thanks also goes to our Captains - Jacob Hill and Bonnie Clark, and our Vice Captains, Gideon Marr-Grogan and Esther Cummins, for leading the Commemoration.

All students are encouraged to represent the College by participating in one of the ANZAC Day marches on April 25th, held in Port Macquarie, Wauchope, or Laurieton. To register your attendance, please click on the Google link below.

HSIE News

As we enter the last week of Term One, I would like to congratulate all the students who have successfully navigated their studies over the course of the term. Students have been encouraged throughout the term to set high expectations for themselves and the quality of the work they do daily. Whilst we often experience highs and lows during a term, a focus on continuous improvement and a steady deepening of skills and understandings helps us to navigate our educational journey throughout Years 7-12. With most subjects having completed one assessment task this term, it is important to reflect on the feedback provided and identify areas of growth for Term Two.

Finally, I wish all our students a happy and as we enjoy the well-earned rest over the school holidays and a chance to recharge our batteries for the demands of Term Two

Year 7-11 Progress Reports

On Tuesday, Year 7-11 Interim Reports were published on the Compass dashboard. These progress reports are a good guide to how your daughter or son has progressed during Term 1 and report on a student’s work habits and their approach to learning in their individual classes. Parents and students are encouraged to look at the interim reports, reflect on how they have performed across the term, and set some goals for term Two.

Australian Defence Force (ADF) visit the College

Recently, SJRC students were privileged to have Lieutenant Olivia Wadsworth (Navy Division) and Corporal Chloe Cooper (Army Division) from the Australian Defence Force attend the College to run an information session.

The informative presentation covered all aspects of pursuing a career within the ADF: recruitment, life as a soldier, officer training, ADFA degrees, different trades and job roles and they answered many varied questions from our students. A special treat was the Mobile ADF Career Centre (MACC) that they were able to bring to the College today. The MACC offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in one-on-one meetings with ADF members, allowing them to ask questions and gain further information about careers in the Defence Force.

Congratulations to the senior students (Years 10-12) who gave up their valuable class time to attend, and in so doing, they maximised their opportunities to receive first-hand information to assist with their future pathway journey.

I am very grateful to Olivia and Chloe for their time assisting our students.

A special thank you to Mark Coulton, the ADF Tour Coordinator, for making the event possible.

Alumni - Class of 2020 - Max Roods

After completing his HSC at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2020, Max undertook 12 months as the TAS trainee on campus while studying his Certificate II Engineering Fabrication Trade. During this time, he also gained his Recreational Pilots Certificate, and in 2022 commenced a Bachelor of Secondary Education (Industrial Technology/Design & Technology) at the University of Newcastle.

Max talks about his proudest moment. “While I may be pursuing a different career in secondary education, aviation is still where my heart lies. The proudest moment would still have to be the day I completed my first solo flight. The feeling of taking off and looking down on the ground and the empty seat beside me was an adrenaline-filled experience that I am still very proud of and lucky to achieve.”

Max, we know that you will soar to great heights, be it in aviation or in the classroom. Congratulations, and well done!

Calling all budding photographers!

As part of the Jubilee Year, the Vatican is promoting an international photography contest, titled: ‘Sport in Motion’. It is for young photographers, professional or amateur, under the age of 25.

There are five categories: sport and hope, sport and family, sport and disability, sport and politics, and sport and ecology.

The winners will be awarded a meeting with the Holy Father, a visit to the Vatican Museums, a workshop in the Osservatore Romano newspaper and their photo will be published internationally.

Do you know a young person - student or teacher - who may be interested in entering this competition?

The deadline to enter is 30 April 2025.
