16s Harry Wells 9s Gala Day

  featured image

Congratulations to our 16s Boys Harry Wells team who played this week. The following report is provided by team coach Mr Gerard Toohey.

The Harry Wells Rugby League 9’s was able to go ahead on Tuesday 13th September without interruption of Covid or weather. SJRC entered a team in the U/16’s. It was possibly the last chance for our Yr 10 boys to play in the same team so there was lots of new faces.

Even though in 9’s there are less players on the field it was no less physical. Our boys combined strongly in their round games and their commitment and team work shone through in both attack and defense. SJRC beat Melville High 5 tries to nil, Taree High 3 tries to 1 and Camden Haven High 3 tries to 2 to finish top of their pool.

There was a strong wind that was making play difficult and some injuries also impacted on the team.

To their credit the SJRC U/16’s rallied and once again found the skills and desire to beat Wingham High in the semi final. Unfortunately they couldn’t do the same in the final and although it was close at times we were beaten by Mackillop who deserved their win, 4 tries to 2.

For the SJRC boys, special mention goes to Eli Watts who made some crucial tackles and incisive attack and competed all day. Kayden Jones Moore was a powerhouse in defense. Sam Watts and Clay Atkins were dangerous whenever they combined. The new faces led by Liam Shrubb, Rocco Pollaci Byrnes & co were invaluable to the team making the final as well.

It was a pleasure being involved with a team that represented the College and their families so proudly over their time at SJRC.

Thank you to Mr Gerard Toohey and Mr John Sprague for your dedication and time coaching these young men over the years.
