Term 2 Week 8 - 16th June 2023

Year 11 Mass

Our Year 11 Mass this week celebrated the efforts of those in our community who selflessly give to others and is a reminder of the ways that we too can give, in the service of God. The funds Year 11 have raised over the past few weeks have enabled us to purchase 13 sleeping bags. Our students attending Street Retreat will take the sleeping bags to Rosie's, an organisation based in Brisbane that supports people who are homeless. We look forward to the sleeping bags being put to good use very soon.

Thank you to all Year 11 students that have contributed to this worthwhile fundraising initiative.

Semester 1 reports 7-11

Semester 1 reports for students in Years 7-11 will be available on the parent portal on Thursday 29th June from 2.00pm. These reports will provide a valuable insight into how your child has progressed throughout the first half of the academic year. The Semester 1 reports will contain three discrete pieces of information:

• Common Grade Scale for Year 7-10 and a ROSA grade for Year 11 reports. This an A-E reporting scale
• Academic profile, which reports on the students understanding of subject specific content and outcomes
• Learning behaviours, which relate to a student’s work habits within each subject, these descriptors are common across all subjects studied.

Year 11 Awards Ceremony

The Year 11 Awards Ceremony will be held in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on Thursday 29th June from 9:05am until 10:00am. An SMS notifying you of your child being a recipient of an Outstanding Application or Achievement Award or a Community Service Award will be sent by the end of Week 9.

Year 7-10 Award Ceremony

Due to the Year 9 Coffs Harbour excursion during the last week of term, the awards ceremony will occur on Wednesday 26th July (Term 3 Week 2) from 9:05am until 10:05am in the College Hall. Further information will be communicated to parents at the commencement of Term 3 regarding this awards ceremony.

Year 10 Transition Program

Year 10 have been immersed in a Stage 5 into 6 transition program as part of their Year 10 PDHPE course. This program has been designed to allow our students to be as fully informed about the academic study program or workforce options they intend to undertake as they transition out of junior schooling. The aim of the College is to ensure that each student makes an informed decision that maximises their opportunities that will emerge over the next few years. Our mantra is that we wish for every student to choose a pathway that is most applicable to their strengths and interests. This pathway for many will involve a choice of completing their HSC pattern of study at St Joseph’s Regional College, continuing their studies at Newman Senior Technical College, undertaking TAFE studies or entering the workforce.
To support our students in making the most informed decision, they will be having two information sessions where they will be given the enrolment handbooks for both St Joseph’s Regional College and Newman Senior Technical College. These handbooks contain a wealth of information that will assist you and your son or daughter in making an informed decision that sets them up on a pathway to future success.
The Regional handbook and information session will occur this Monday 19th June and Newman’s handbook information session the following week on Thursday 29th June. A final reminder that the Year 11 Information Night for St Joseph’s Regional College is held on Monday 24th July from 6:00pm in the College Hall and Newman Senior Technical College Information Night will be held on Tuesday 25th July in their hall. I have included all the upcoming events in the timeline below.

Tell Them From Me Survey - Students relationships at SJRC

TTFM1.png
This year we had 917 students complete our annual Tell Them From Me survey. Our staff have already spent time in various teams analysing the student data and thinking about how we can best support our students into the future, informed by the student responses collected through the survey process. One affirming data set reflected the strong relationships students reported as having with their peers.

In response to the data set that reflects whether “students have friends at school they can trust and who encourage them to make positive choices”, our students are sitting at or above the norm across year groups. Having positive friendships is particularly important during adolescence when teenagers are developmentally geared towards peer influence as they move away from their parental sphere of influence. In coming weeks, we will share with you some of the feedback from our parent, student and staff surveys via our newsletter.

The Push Up Challenge at SJRC

Our school community has been a buzz each morning with push-ups, star jumps and other exercise routines in raising awareness of how exercise can positively influence our wellbeing. Each day, participating PC's have been completing a specific number of push ups aligned with a relevant statistic around mental health. We are proud of participating students! Thank you to Leader of Wellbeing (Positive Programs), Mr Dylan Sainsbury for leading this initiative within our school.

Spotlight on Mother Teresa from Assembly

Mother_Teresa_image.JPGThis week, we heard from two students from Wilson, about their Justice patron for 2023. Here is what they presented:

At the age of twelve, Mother Teresa felt the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. She went on to become a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need. For the following 45 years, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying. Through her spirit of love and compassion, Saint Teresa believed that one should “Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier.”

Rockschool Results

On Saturday, June 3rd, drums & percussion students from the St Agnes' Parish Secondary Schools gathered at St. Joseph's Regional College to sit their RockSchool graded contemporary music exams. The examiner left very impressed by the work of all students and we are happy to share the excellent results our St. Joseph's Regional students received.

Bailey Thompson achieved a High Merit in Grade 2 Drums with a score of 88/100, while Jarrod Muller took home a Distinction with a score of 91/100 in Grade 3 Drums. Both Sam Duff and Felix Wade sat their Grade 4 Drums exam and received Distinctions with scores of 94/100 for Sam and a 90/100 for Felix.

Adam Cook scored an 86/100 for a High Merit in Grade 4 Guitar, while Dominic Matheson managed very rare double Distinctions with a 92/100 for his Grade 2 Drums and 93/100 for his Grade 6 Guitar.

These students put in a lot of hard work in preparation and should be very proud of their achievements.

Former College Captain Ella Handley returned to St Joseph's Regional College last week to speak to students interested in finding out more about Griffith University. Ella is currently a 2nd year student and was able to give some great information about moving away from home, finding your feet in a very new learning landscape, the benefits of 'getting yourself out there', and the importance of maintaining a good GPA amongst other specific course information. Thank you so much Ella!

Careers

This week's Alumni is Emily Shelley, Class of 2018

Our second Alumni for this week is Dylan Mason, class of 2018

Dylan Mason graduated from St Joseph's Regional College in 2018 and has used his time since in an extremely productive, interesting and exciting way. As a recent graduate of University of Sydney's B Science/B Advanced Science (Honours), majoring in both Taronga Wildlife Conservation and Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology, he has participated in a wealth of activities along the way. His final theses explored the issue of physiological responses of eucalypt species to water stress, and he hasn't ruled out further study and research as a PhD candidate. His current job takes him to some interesting places balancing field work and desk-based report writing with an ecological consultancy based in Sydney, but with outlying and interstate offices. Dylan, we are so proud of you!
