My first visit to St Peter's Primary was with Macey & Alanna Walker. I have also visited St Joseph's Port Macquarie with Lilliana Anderson & Ryder Monckton and St Agnes' Primary with Armani Daley and Harley Cooper. The final visit to St Joseph's Wauchope Mrs Jennifer Furney attended today with Henry Warren & Leila McDonnell. To conclude the visits I will attend St Joseph's Laurieton on Monday 25th March with Jayla Jolley & Kynan Thompson.

Principal's Message

Completion of Naplan Tests

This week Year 7 and 9 students completed their Naplan tests across four key domains: writing, reading, language conventions including spelling and grammar and culminated in their numeracy test. It was pleasing to see so many students confidently tackle the elements of each test and strive to the best of their ability. I would like to thank the dedicated team of teaching and support staff who enabled this complex testing program to run so smoothly over the four days.

The assessment cycle continues across Years 7-12 with a range of in class and hand in type tasks occurring over the last two weeks of the term. If a student in Years 7-10 is absent on a day of a task they need to see Ms Marchment upon return to school to sit the missed tasks. Students in Years 11 and 12 also require a medical certificate in the case of illness or some other form of documentation in the case of misadventure. Finally, in relation to hand in tasks, a failure to submit by the due date may result in assessment penalties applying. Thank you for your continued support in supporting the assessment practices in the College.

Academic Support

Once again it has been fantastic to see so many students access the facilities in the Library after school to stay on top of the rigours of their courses. Seminars continue to be offered for our senior students and many teachers have been making themselves available to support our senior students as they work methodically through the Term 1 assessment cycle. A reminder that the Library is open this Sunday from 11.00 am until 2.00 pm for our senior students as they continue to prepare for their end of term assessments.

Year 7-11 Progress Reports

In Week 11 Year 7-11 Progress Reports will be published on Compass. These progress reports are a good guide to how your daughter or son has progressed during Term 1 and report on a student’s work habits and their approach to learning in their individual classes. Year 12 Semester 1 reports will be issued early in Term 2.

As the term comes to a close, I ask you to continue to encourage your children to apply themselves to their studies to the best of their ability and have a productive end to the first school term of the academic year.

Family Connect in Schools

Family Connect is an amazing service that we are very fortunate to have available to support our SJRC families. This week we welcomed our new Family Connect worker Jasmine Waters to our school community. Please be aware that any family member of a student enrolled in our school can access this service. Families are welcome to self-refer by contacting Jasmine directly.

Photo.png

Hello, I'm Jasmine Waters, the Family Connect in Schools worker based here in your school.

I've been living and working within the Hastings Region for the last 5 and a half years, connecting parents and families to supports within the community to help overcome any challenges they may be facing. I also have my Bachelor of Psychological Science.

When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my family and kids, or curled up with a coffee and a good book.

I'm here to help support the greater school community with any concerns you may be facing by providing a safe space to identify the best supports to connect you with and advocate for your family and their greater wellbeing.

Bus safety and conduct

unnamed.jpg

Please remind your child of the importance of safe and respectful bus travel to and from school. Under the terms of the NSW government school travel transport scheme, bus travel can be removed due to unsafe behaviours, including behaviour that distracts the driver from his or her core business of driving the bus. Our duty of care extends to transit to and from school. Students are aware that the same positive conduct is expected when they are out of the school in College uniform as when they are at school during school hours. Any student found to be misrepresenting College values and engaging in unsafe or disrespectful behaviour on the bus will have consequences enforced by the College. Thank you for your partnership in discussing our shared expectations of students when they are travelling on buses to and from school.

Year 10 Retreat

Year 10 attended Bonny Hills Francis Retreat Centre for their retreats over week 7. Mr Shane Hyland facilitated the Retreats at Bonny Hills while Mr Dylan Sainsbury took care of all the preparation and accommodation aspects of the Retreat.

The retreat encouraged students to reflect on themselves, their families and the influences they have in their lives through a variety of activities. Students were given the opportunity to share with others in their small groups and get to know other students who they don’t normally interact with. The participation by all in the group activities and forgiveness reflection was wonderful to see and the groups all came closer together for the experience. Our wonderful College Youth Ministers Emily Burg and Christi Morrow (Mackillop) alongside Regional Ministry Assistants Jacob Somers and Jaz Letchford, ran games and icebreakers as well as sharing deeply from their own life experience.

A big thank you goes out to all the staff who came for both retreats, demonstrating their care for our students by leaving their families overnight and sharing their own stories with us all. Students were able to gain valuable insights and new respect for each other and learn more about who their teachers really are.

Comment from Dylan Sainsbury, Leader of Student Wellbeing - Year 10
"I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying Year 10 to both halves of the Retreat this year. We saw plenty of laughs, a few tears and a cohort bonding together through shared experiences and reflective activities. I would like to thank Year 10 for their attitude towards the Retreat as well as their behaviour and willingness to get involved with the activities. I hope you all got something out of the experience."

Some great feedback from some of our students

"There were many fun times and great memories that we will keep forever."

Yr10_Retreat_140324_31_.jpg

"I think that the retreat was a good opportunity to open up and connect with my peers."

"It was an experience that I will never forget, I feel like it brought us together as a cohort."

"Retreat was a freeing experience where I was able to grow closer to my teachers and peers and create moments I will cherish for the rest of my life."

"One of the best school events I have been on."

IMG_8021.JPG

"The retreat is a very good way to either improve upon, or build new relationships and gain a deeper understanding of how you feel about God, the activities are mostly deep and meaningful and are a good way to reflect on your inner thoughts or problems."

The journey of Lent towards Easter draws to an end

This weekend begins Holy Week with Palm Sunday - the most solemn of weeks in the Church calendar. The rejoicing of Jesus’ triumphant arrival into Jerusalem ahead of the Jewish Passover turns to horror and sadness when he is arrested, tried, tortured and crucified by the end of the week. As we approach the solemn and spiritually significant time of Holy Week, our school community is gearing up for initiatives embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity. This year, we are excited to announce our fundraising efforts in support of Caritas through Project Compassion.

Holy_Week.jpgHoly Week is a time for reflection, prayer, and acts of kindness. As we commemorate the passion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, let us also embrace the opportunity to extend compassion and support to those in need. By participating in our Lenten fundraising efforts for Caritas, you contribute to vital humanitarian causes and embody the spirit of Lent with prayer, fasting and of course almsgiving.

We encourage all members of our school community to get involved, whether by
purchasing raffle tickets, or enjoying some delicious donuts on Tuesday of Week 9. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and bring light into the lives of others during this Lent, Holy Week and beyond.

Anzac Day 2024

Anzac_Day_2024.jpg

Our College participates and is well-represented at the annual Anzac Day marches and wreath-laying ceremonies at Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton. We are proud of our tradition of engaging with community events. This is one opportunity to serve our community. This service will be recognised and contribute to students' community service hours.

How do students get involved?

Please complete the following Google form link ANZAC Day Marches and Ceremonies 2024 to register your child's commitment to representing the College at the ANZAC Day march and wreath laying service on Thursday, 25th April 2024.

The meeting locations and times are:

Port Macquarie - Thai Tastic Restaurant, cnr Horton and William Streets between 9:20am - 9:30am
Wauchope - RSL Club, Young Street at 10:15am
Laurieton - United Services Club, Seymour Street at 10:00am

Please note that students are asked to wear their full "white" uniform and bring their College hat or cap. Shirts should be tucked for this occasion. Senior students are to wear the College tie. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle on the day. We ask that students remain for the duration of the ceremony.

Project Compassion

DONUT_SALE_FOR_PROJECT_COMPASSION_2_.png

Next Tuesday is Donut Day!

With every donut purchased, you're not just satisfying your sweet tooth, you're also making a difference in someone's life. All proceeds will go towards supporting Project Compassion, an organization dedicated to helping those in need in our community and across the world.

Every bite counts towards a brighter future for those facing hardships. Join us in making a meaningful impact!

A number of Pastoral Care groups have run their own special fundraisers for Project Compassion. We thank those teachers, students and their families who continue to demonstrate generous support to CARITAS.

We kindly remind all parents and guardians that college excursions and events are coordinated exclusively through Compass. Consent and payments are to be completed via Compass. We strongly recommend using the Compass app, as using a browser window on your phone may not display all necessary information for submitting consent.

Upon receiving an email notifying you of your child's need for consent, please consult with your child and ensure that consent is provided by the specified deadline. If you receive an email, SMS, or push notification prompting you to complete consent, it indicates that your consent has not been received by the college and requires your attention.

Please be aware that indicating your child's non-attendance at an event through the consent process does not automatically update your child's attendance for that date. You must also navigate to your child's profile in Compass, select "Attendance," and provide a reason for their absence.

For parents uncomfortable with using their bank details on Compass, we suggest purchasing a pre-paid card available at Australia Post. These cards can be loaded and reloaded as needed by you and can then be utilized for Compass event payments.

During the course of alumni Matthew Walsh's time in the Australian Army, he has been fortunate to visit some amazing places like Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, enjoying incredible swimming holes and camping spots. His training has resulted in the development of many skills including basic hand and carpentry skills, alternative navigation methods, and learning the PNG language 'Tok Pisin'. Leadership skills and independence are also traits which have been gained over these short years. Congratulations Matthew! We are so proud of your achievements and progress in serving your country.

Alumni - Where are you now?

St Joseph's Regional has a rich tradition spanning over 50 years, so if you're a parent, grandparent, community member, interested bystander, and a former student, we would love to hear from you. Our alumni program showcases former students with a story about their post-school journey. Our ex-students can be tradespeople, business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, and more. They can be dealing with people on a daily basis, researching in a scientific lab, caring for our vulnerable members of society, keeping a protective eye on our communities, writing the stories that make up our history, caring for our environment etc.

If you would like to have YOUR story showcased in our fortnightly newsletter, broadcast across our social media channels, used in information sessions for our students, and spotlighted in our Senior Study, then please send the following to pmreg-careers@lism.catholic.edu.au:

  • a bullet point list of what you have done since leaving Regional (please include the dates)
  • a short statement outlining advice that you would give to your younger self, knowing what you know now, and
  • an appropriate photo of yourself, possibly depicting you undertaking the work that you conduct as part of your career.
