Musings

Attending last Friday's Musings evening was an absolute pleasure. It showcased the many talented students who attend music tutoring lessons here at the College. I thank Mrs Sarah Butler, our Acting Leader of Co-curricular Music, for organising the evening. I also express my gratitude to our Music Tutors, who play an important part in performance music at the College. Their hard work, expertise and patience were clearly evident on this evening.  I refer you to Sarah's report below.

Musings is the first of what is planned to be a twice-yearly event for the co-curricular music space.

We are blessed with a talented pool of music educators who never cease to inspire and motivate our students and this evening was designed to celebrate them and share the fruits of everyone's labour! Performing is a wonderful way to showcase hard work and talent. It is an important part of being a musician, but performance can sometimes become restricted to high-pressure situations like big concerts and exams. Musings allows us to share creativity and practice performing in a relaxed setting with a fiercely loyal and supportive audience of family and friends.

Music featured ranged from vocal numbers from musical hits to solo piano, brass duets and guitar improvisation. It can honestly be said that Years 7-12 were all represented. Music is certainly something that brings us all together regardless of age!

At our amazing College, students have the opportunity to learn vocals, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, violin, cello, etc. If you are tempted, please contact me, and we can have a chat about your music dreams.
sarah.butler@lism.catholic.edu.au

Congratulations to all of the students who performed. You all did so well, without exception, and I loved hearing about your progress and the amazing variety of music that you have been exploring!

Round-Table Discussion on Refounding the College House Team Names
Thursday, 15th August 4:30pm - 6:00 pm

This invitation is for students, parents, staff (past and present), alumni and our St Agnes' Catholic Parish community.

Changing circumstances have radically affected the composition and role of the Catholic school in recent years…

“We invite all those involved with our Catholic schools to join us in ‘refounding’ or ‘re-visioning’ our schools as centres of the new evangelisation.”
(Bishops of NSW-ACT - Crossroads 2007)

“Refounding in general is the process whereby creative people identify the widening gap between the original inspiring story of an institution and the changing realities of contemporary life.”
(Arbuckle, 2016)

St Joseph’s Regional College is undergoing a process of refounding. This is where we look at who we are as a Catholic school and how we can enhance our Catholic Identity now and into the future. A core outcome of this process will be updating our House names. We are the only Parish in the Diocese with colonialist names for College House Teams. All other Secondary Colleges’ House names reflect their Catholic foundations. We invite you to be a voice in this process.

On Thursday, 15th August, we are hosting a twilight plenary-style discussion at the College, where we will seek school and parish community voices around what is important in a school's Catholic Identity and how we can sustain a strong Catholic Identity into the future. The evening will commence with tea, coffee, and light snacks at 4:30 pm before we move into the plenary discussions from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Year 8 & 9 Reflection Days

Year 8 and Year 9 were privileged this week to spend a day working and learning with the team from Passionist Youth Retreats, who facilitated their annual Reflection days. The team specialises in creating retreats allowing young people to be themselves amongst their peers.
Year 8 explored and gained valuable skills in 'Relationship Building,' which included getting to know themselves and others. Year 9 was faced with the questions of how to become their 'Most Athentic Self'; being brave enough to take off the mask to show the real version of themselves. The day also provided opportunities for both year groups to strengthen communication with their peers and teachers.

Ignite Fundraiser - Thursday 8th August

Fundraiser.webp

This year, we have around 40 students who have been nominated to attend the Ignite Conference in Brisbane. This is a highlight event in the Diocesan calendar where we have approximately 300 high school students from across the Diocese travel up to engage in praise and worship and powerful workshops. Students and young people come from all over the country and even the Southern Pacific to attend this conference.

To assist our students with the cost of attending, they will be holding a Drinks & Treats stall on Thursday, 8th August near the Senior Canteen. Cans of drinks will be $3 and there will be a range of other treats to purchase too.

Love Bites

This week, Year 10 students participated in the Love Bites Respectful Relationships Program. Students were well-engaged throughout the day, and a post-program survey indicated strong learning and positive student feedback (please see some data snapshots below). Thank you to the many staff who were involved in bringing this important learning to our students.

We encourage all parents to engage their teenagers in normalised conversations around consent and respectful relationships in their homes.

Attendance Matters

At SJRC, we believe every child matters every day. School attendance is crucial for students' learning and well-being. Hence, the rigour or legislation sitting around compulsory school attendance for all young people until they are 17 years of age. There are no optional days for school attendance. Community events such as sports carnivals, Retreats and Wellbeing Program Days are essential for holistic student development and are always compulsory. Please communicate all absence matters with us via the Compass App. Thank you for your partnership as we continue to support all our students in their learning and wellbeing.

We are featuring two Alumni's this week. Dillon Heagney and Anais Bleasdale

Dillon Heagney

Reconnecting with alumni who graduated from St Joseph's Regional College 10+ years ago is proving to unlock valuable insights into opportunities for movement between roles and responsibilities and focus areas within the same sector/industry. This week's spotlight on Dillon Heagney is a prime example of this, as his initial degree and employment in pharmacy have seen him take up business development work within the pharmaceutical industry. Well done, Dillon!

Anais Bleasdale

Anais Bleasdale has had an exceptionally busy and productive path since graduating from St Joseph's Regional College in 2019. Along with solo travel to Canada, she has successfully completed a Bachelor of Psychology through the University of New England, AU, while holding various mentor and support roles at college and within the Aboriginal community in Armidale. She has collected numerous awards and commendations along the way and also achieved rank at TS Armidale (Australian Navy Cadets). Anais works as a case manager in the very important Domestic Violence sector.

Well done Anais! You are contributing in so many ways to the wellbeing of our society and the growth of future citizens. We are immensely proud of your success.

The University of Newcastle Visit

On Monday, Alex, Grace, and Paris from The University of Newcastle, Australia, visited the College and presented timely and valuable information to Year 12 students. Topics covered included applications, living on campus, financial matters and more. We are so grateful for the strong support we receive each year from UON. #aHSC4opportunity

Year 11 Career Quip

Yesterday, Year 11 students travelled to the Taree University Campus to attend CareerQuip. This event is targeted to our students in that there is a broad cross-section of exhibitors available to disseminate career and employment information. These include nearly 50 exhibitors, including National Association of Prospective Student Advisers members, such as universities, private and vocational colleges, and student support services. Additionally, TAFE and employer organisations were represented along with local and regional skills shortage employers, trades, and vocations. What an amazing opportunity for our students to engage with their futures. #aHSC4opportunity
